Short-Term RentalsTax Tip #281: Vacation Rental 14-Day Rule Exemption
If you rent a property for fewer than 15 days per year, the rental income is completely tax-free and you do not report it at all. You still deduct mortgage interest and property taxes on Schedule A as personal expenses. This works well for properties near major events: renting your beach house for 2 weeks during peak season at $5,000/week gives you $10,000 tax-free.
