Tax Tip #59: You Can Deduct a Loss on Rental Property Sale

Unlike your primary residence, a loss on the sale of a rental property is deductible. If your adjusted basis is $300K and you sell for $260K, the $40K loss offsets other income. This applies to both active and passive income depending on your participation level.
