Tax Tip #331: Deducting Background Check and Screening Costs

Tenant screening costs you pay directly ($25-$40 per applicant) are deductible business expenses even if the applicant is not approved. Credit report fees, criminal background checks, and eviction history reports are all deductible on Schedule E. If tenants pay the application fee and you pay the screening service, it is a wash with no tax impact.
