Tax Tip #257: Short-Term Rental Occupancy Tax Obligations

Most cities and counties impose occupancy or lodging taxes on short-term rentals, typically 6-15% of nightly rates. While Airbnb collects these in many jurisdictions, not all platforms do. Unpaid occupancy taxes are not deductible but paid occupancy taxes are. If you collect $50K/year and owe 10% occupancy tax, that $5,000 is deductible as a business expense.
