Tax Tip #342: Deducting Water Damage Restoration Costs

Emergency water damage restoration ($2,000-$10,000) is generally a deductible repair expense that restores the property to its pre-damage condition. If the restoration includes upgrades beyond the original condition (better flooring, upgraded drywall), those portions must be capitalized. Keep the restoration company invoice itemized to separate repair from improvement costs.
