Tax Tip #217: Abandonment Loss for Demolished Structures

If you demolish an existing structure on rental property to rebuild, the remaining undepreciated basis of the old structure can be written off as an abandonment loss. On a property with $80K remaining basis in a torn-down building, that is an $80K ordinary loss deduction in the year of demolition.
