Tax Tip #199: Insurance Premium Deduction Timing

Landlord insurance premiums are deductible in the year they apply, not necessarily the year paid. If you prepay a 12-month policy in December for the following year, only one month is deductible that year. The remaining 11 months are deducted in the next tax year. Average landlord policies run $1,200-$2,400/year.
