State TaxesTax Tip #194: State Income Tax Nexus for Out-of-State Rentals
Owning rental property in another state creates income tax nexus in that state. You must file a nonresident return in each state where you own rentals. If you live in a no-income-tax state like Florida but own rentals in California, you will owe California state tax on that rental income at rates up to 13.3%.
